2022 Year in Review

Reflecting on 2022

You know that feeling when the sun peeks through the clouds, and you close your eyes and let it wash warmth over your face for a moment? That is what the promise of recovery, late last year, felt like to me. Yet, emerging from the pandemic, my vision, along with that of so many others, has been altered as we hold our friends, families, and communities even closer. We see things differently; we exist in a new context. The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation shares this refreshed perspective and is advancing its portfolio with new, diverse approaches to address our changed and changing environment.

Our portfolio is organized around tackling issues within arts & culture, communities, bioscience, and the environment. Within these segments, our 2022 grants reflect our desire to positively impact the region.

The Earthshot Prize was designed to find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet this decade. Indigenous Women of the Great Barrier Reef, a group of indigenous rangers, were winners of the prize for reviving our oceans. Photo courtesy of The Earthshot Prize.
Access to arts and culture continues to be a priority for the foundation. The Pacific Northwest is abundant with talent but has fallen short of inclusive development and expression, leaving some communities excluded from access to resources and with untapped creative potential. Through investment in the human experience of arts & culture and empowering young people as changemakers, the foundation seeks better and more sustainable outcomes for our communities.

In tackling environmental challenges, conservationists, field biologists, and ecologists lack access to the latest technologies that can increase their understanding of a problem or help them identify and deploy solutions. Science and technology continue to be the critical pillars of rigorous and tractable approaches to these challenges. Supporting partnerships between technologists and scientists drives us to take risks where others cannot.

The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, which makes grant recommendations that are funded by the foundation, continues to catalyze great strides in bioscience discoveries through the Allen Distinguished Investigators as well as Allen Discovery Centers. I encourage you to explore the progress they made in 2022 including revelations about the cause of Alzheimer’s.

While our areas of focus remain consistent, we are evolving how we work.

We are growing our muscle in building strategic networks optimized for exponential impact, with a stronger conviction in community-led programs. We took an expanded view of grantmaking, exploring new types of financing and mechanisms to effectively get the dollars to where they are best leveraged. Lastly, we focused on investments that would fill knowledge gaps and generate a clearer understanding of the issues to better act on them.

As we look to this new year, the foundation will continue searching for those reflective and promising moments and look forward to standing in partnership with our community to build a brighter future for all.
